KODAK SUPER 8 FILMMAKING CHALLENGE

Director(s): Troy Walters

This is my very first Super 8 film I've made back in October 2013. The film is a capture of Port Kembla Steelworks and surrounding plants on a couple of locations with myself talking about what I point the camera to. This film also includes the old copper smelter stack that was demolished only a few months after this film was made! The film I used was an AGFACHROME Super 8 that expired back in 1979 so it was a hit or miss if this film were to work or not, I overexposed the film by 3 f-stops to compensate for sensitivity loss over the 3 decade period. I home processed this film in Caffenol C (coffee, vitamin C, washing soda) which was also the very first time since high school I've developed a film and in Caffenol C, it was a very rough hack job involving the Super 8 film being scrunched up into a ball and placed in a black flower pot as the developing tank with a fitting lid, nonetheless the end result was a very overdeveloped dense but yet still viewable B&W negative and I was over the moon! Nanolab transferred this film to digital and the end result is an ultra grain but just watchable picture as seen. I also made this film a sound film by recording the audio to a cassette in a portable cassette recorder and transferred it to computer and in editing synced the audio up with the film. So that's my introduction to shooting Super 8 film, Caffenol C processing and sparked my interest film photography/cinematography!
