Director(s): Susie Singer Carter
My Mom and The Girl is a 2-minute excerpt taken from a film I made of the same title. It's a true story based on my mother, a former singer named Norma “Nanny” (Valerie Harper) suffering from Alzheimer's. This excerpt depicts Norma as she becomes increasingly disoriented and paranoid while spending the night with her caregiver, Irlanda (Liz Torres). When Norma's anxiety propels her to "go home" on foot at 10:00 PM at night through the streets of East Los Angeles, her watchful caregiver follows close on her heels until this episode passes... The full film follows Irlanda and Norma's brief but the adventurous journey that takes a turn when they stumble upon “the Girl” (Harmony Santana), a wild character with an unexpected narrative. Norma's fearlessness and biting humor turn an urban adventure into a heartwarming story where disabilities can be redefined as gifts, The film was written and directed by Susie Singer Carter. Produced by Don Priess, Romell Foster-Owens, and Tony Cacciotti. Beautifully shot by cinematographer Chris Tufty.
