KODAK SUPER 8 FILMMAKING CHALLENGE

Director(s): Danny Plotnick

A gang of female Skate Boarders and their pet rats terrorize all the boy skate boarders in town. Shot on Kodachrome back in 1986. Skate Witches was one of the first Super 8 films I ever shot. Over the course of the 80s and 90s I would go on to make close to 20 sync sound Super 8 films of increasing complexity. I’ve chosen to showcase Skate Witches because in the last half dozen years it has found a rabid audience on-line. Not only has it inspired real live all-female skateboard gangs, but it has also been referenced in songs, in comics, and spawned a host of tribute videos. A cottage industry of illicit Skate Witches merchandise has also sprung up. Search the internet and you can buy yourself Skate Witches buttons and ski hats. Why has the film garnered such a cult following? I think it has to do with the short length (ideal for the internet age), but it also represents an authentic slice of the 80s. On the other hand, maybe legions of young people just love Kodachrome.
