Madagascar Research and Conservation Institute (MRCI) is a growing Non-Governmental Organization in North Western Madagascar. We are located on the beautiful and vibrant Island of Nosy Komba. Together with local government, we have managed to have the reef opposite our camp and along our coast line declared a Marine Protected Area. By collaborating with local officials and village leaders, we are able to educate our Malagasy neighbours on the importance of conserving this area. Our Marine Conservation Program, with the aid of volunteers, does weekly and monthly species and reef surveys. Our Environmental Awareness Day, which occurs every last Friday of the month, allows us to discuss and engage with the local community on topics such as the dangers of plastic pollution and over fishing. We have also set up an artificial reef system which we regularly monitor and assess. We strongly believe in the global benefit of collaboration between NGOs, volunteers and the general public. Together, and only together, can we ensure the future of our marine environment.
