DAHÉLI HALL [da.hay.lee] is a Los Angeles based performer, writer, and director. She most recently wrote and directed Disney Channel’s hit digital feature EXCHANGE, and her writing can also be seen on Funny or Die, VH1, CBS, and FOX. Her original comedy ANGRY BLACK WOMEN screened at 2017’s Just For Laughs, Series Fest, The New York Television Festival, and IFP Film Week. Her short films, THE MEMO, and MANDINGO IN A BOX, both won HBO Short Film awards and were licensed to air on the network. Dahe?li has a BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and an MFA from USC’s Peter Stark Producing Program. Dahéli wrote and directed, EXCHANGE, digital-movie commissioned by The Disney Channel. The film was a part of the Disney Channel’s short-film franchise “Free Period” on its digital platforms. Movies debuted daily on the network’s YouTube page, which has over a million followers. Disney Channel said that the projects reflected “authentic new storytellers” and EXCHANGE displayed one of the highest in audience viewership. EXCHANGE follows Brigitte, a funny, bright, Haitian American student, who learns that her class will not be studying abroad. When Brigitte suggests to her teacher that her class exchange households with each other instead, he goes for the idea. But, Brigitte never considered having to stay at the house of her biggest crush! Dahéli also wrote and directed, MANDINGO IN A BOX, which won the HBO Short Film Award at the American Black Film Festival and was licensed to air on HBO for two years. The film is a satirical sci-fi short set in a world where there are no available Black men to date and therefore, Mandingo in a Box, a life-sized Black male lover doll, is available for purchase. The story follows how one lonely woman brings home her own Mandingo only to fight to keep him for herself when her roommate wants to share him; each woman’s projections and expectations on love eventually cause Mandingo to malfunction.
