The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival  is the premiere venue for nonfiction film in the American West. Big Sky offers an ideal setting for filmmakers to premiere new work and develop lasting relationships with fellow filmmakers and industry. The festival draws an audience of 20,000 and film entries from every corner of the globe to a uniquely intimate mountain town setting with a local Montana flavor. The festival hosts over 200 visiting artists, presents an average of 150 nonfiction films, and offers a variety of exciting events.

In addition to screenings, the Big Sky DocShop is a five-day industry event that includes panels, master classes, workshops, and The Big Sky Pitch Session. DocShop’s participants have included: HBO Documentary Films, Participant Media, BBC Storyville, CNN Films, ITVS, POV, PBS, Tribeca Film Institute, Sundance Doc Fund, Chicken & Egg Pictures, The Fledgling Fund and Catapult Film Fund. Big Sky is an Academy Award-qualifying festival in the Shorts and Mini Doc categories.

The Wilma

A modernized 1920s vaudeville house-turned-live-event venue on the banks of the Clark Fork River, The Wilma is a state-of-the-art facility within a spectacular historic building. Locally owned and operated, The Wilma is the stunning centerpiece of Missoula’s live entertainment scene and has been home to BSDFF since 2005.

The Roxy 1

Missoula’s film-culture heartbeat and community cinema, Roxy Theater presents a wide array of indie, foreign and classic films, as well as theater and community events. A local establishment since the late 1930s, the Roxy is also home to many educational programs and produces two indie film festivals in-house each year.

Elks

One of many iconic early 20th Century buildings in Missoula, the Hellgate Elks Lodge has been host to myriad entertainment and community events for over a century. Just one block off the Higgins Avenue downtown artery, the Elks Lodge theater will be the anchor venue of the festival, hosting a captivating lineup of films, the festival filmmaker lounge, daily happy hours and special late night events in the Elks main floor venue, Stage 112.

The Silver

On Saturday, February 4th, The Silver Theater building on South Higgins collapsed under heavy snow and ice. Thankfully the theater was empty and no one was hurt. Our sympathies and thoughts are with our friends at The Silver who have been wonderful supporters of the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and the Big Sky Film Series. The Silver was also an official venue for the 2017 festival. This will not affect the screening times and dates of these films, nor will it affect screenings at other venues.

Silver screenings have been moved to the following venues:

  • Missoula Children’s Theatre - Sun. Feb 19, Mon. Feb 20, Sun. Feb 26
  • The Public House - Thurs. Feb 23, Sat. Feb 25
  • The Wilma - Sat. Feb 18, Tues. Feb 21, Wed. Feb 22
  • Roxy 2 - Fri. Feb 24

See the updated schedule on the schedule page.
