Get your short film on television!
REVOLT is looking for dramatic or comedic short films (5-22 minutes in length) exploring horror, supernatural, suspense, thriller, or sci-fi themes, through the lens of Hip Hop culture.
Call to Action: This Halloween, in honor of this burgeoning genre, REVOLT is looking to shine a spotlight on dramatic or comedic short films exploring horror, supernatural, suspense, thriller, or sci-fi themes, through the lens of Hip Hop culture. The winning films will premiere in late October in a special “Hip Hop Halloween” edition of REVOLT’s short film showcase, Short & Fresh.
In 2017, Hollywood was forever changed by the release of Get Out, Jordan Peele’s surprise blockbuster that redefined the horror genre’s relationship with the black community and raised the bar for filmmakers everywhere. Black characters were no longer treated as token individuals or comedic relief in horror films. They were rightly portrayed as layered, complicated protagonists fighting back against unspeakable evil while exploring universal themes. Audiences embraced the film, showing there’s a huge fanbase to be had for horror films featuring, made by, or made for People of Color. Hollywood took notice, and we’re now witnessing a new age of black genre content, from Us to Ma, to reboots of Candyman and The Twilight Zone from Jordan Peele and Saw from Chris Rock, to Xavier Burgin’s Horror Noire, a new documentary exploring the very issue of the black community’s complicated relationship with horror films.
