With just one line, show us what family means to you

The Institute for Family is hosting a two-part film challenge. This is our first quickfire film challenge.

In just one week, we challenge you to create and submit a 3-15 second video of what family means to you.

You must show what family means to you in one shot/frame.

You must use one of the following lines in your film (nothing more, nothing less):

Script 1: "Family means (fill in the blank)."

Script 2: "Family is (fill in the blank)."

Your background/characters/setting should SHOW the audience your meaning of family and include family members. We know that some families we are born into, and some we choose. Each family is unique and valued. Family may at times be a source of comfort and joy and at other times, a source of frustration and pain. We want to see all types of families and their complexities. This can be your family, or another family who you would like to showcase. You may submit up to three film submissions to this film challenge.

Portray your family with creativity, cinematically, and with style. These videos may be used in promotional pieces created for the Institute for Family and used as quick inserts into edits. We are launching a second film challenge later this month to tell longer form family stories (3-15 minutes). So the family you choose to profile could be your characters for the next film challenge.

How It Works: Filmmakers have from July 6 - 13, to create and submit their film. Submissions are judged for admittance into the film challenge before voting opens. Acceptance into the film challenge is based on the quality of content and adherence to the assignment. Accepted entries will compete in the film challenge which is hosted in two rounds. Audience voting opens July 13 at noon and closes July 20 at noon MST. The top 5 films with the most audience votes and 5 films selected by the preliminary jury will advance to the finals round. From these top finalist films, a jury panel will award a Grand Prize winner, a runner-up, and two additional honorable mentions.

Film submissions are evaluated based on the following judging criteria:

  • Creativity
  • Technical Merit
  • Fresh, Diverse Perspective
  • Adherence to the Assignment

Prizes for the Winners:

Grand Prize: $500

First runner-up: $300

2 honorable mentions: $100 each

We may feature the top submissions on the new Insitute for Family website, in video promotional materials, and across social media channels.

About the Institute for Family:

Why does the Institute promote the transformative power of family?

We believe that family is unconditional love. That family gives us that safe place to share our dreams and lift each other up. It’s the support we all need and deserve. But we know that some families face difficult circumstances that threaten this stability and thus their happiness and well-being. Even when they look for a helping hand, it can go unseen and unnoticed. The Institute For Family wants to help these families by listening and sharing the laughter, tears and emotions that are all part of being a family so that everyone – especially those who can help make positive change - can see how important it is that we support, build and preserve families.
