Magic-realist teen drama: Lonely and vulnerable 15 year old MOLLY bathes hundreds of children in the local river (like a baptism). A teenage gang go to bully her for it but OWEN cannot admit he really likes her so he must choose to side with his friends or protect the girl. Waterbabies was filmed in the deprived former coal-mining areas of North East England. It adds spirituality and magic to a social realist style. The Director works with disadvantaged teenagers and they inspired him to create a film which engages a youth audience and spreads positive messages about community and self-belief.
