Samoan Flaming Fire Knife Dance

Traditional dance originated in Samoa. Male dancer demonstrates spinning of the Fire Knife which is basically a baton like stick of metal and wood with a knife blade at one end. The blade and the opposite end shaft are fitted with cloth and soaked with fuel. Once both ends are lit, the dancer demonstrates a variety of movements. Dance is typically accompanied by drumming. Meki's Tamure Polynesian Dance Group is a professional cultural group which originated in Baltimore and is now based in Anne Arundel County in Maryland. The group has been performing in Maryland and surrounding states since 1969 demonstrating programs of all live music, dancing and drumming. The programs cover the islands of Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga.
