A tiny fish with a big impact! We look at how the natural history of the world’s most famous aquarium resident, the guppy, has changed the way we think about evolution, social networks, and a whole lot more! In one of the most potent examples since Darwin’s studies in the Galápagos, unique habitats on the island of Trinidad have created a “Natural Laboratory” unlike any other natural study system known to date. This habitat has done more than provide answers to pressing biological questions. It has allowed scientists to ask BETTER questions and enabled information exchange across multiple disciplines. There is a tendency to devalue the biodiversity of the tropics, although that biodiversity has been sourced for centuries to fuel commerce and culture across the globe. This film explores the value of basic biology in the information age, and expands discussions on the value of biodiversity beyond popular themes of carbon sequestration, the latest “superfood” or finding cures to disease. Production to date has been made possible largely through volunteers on micro budgets. Additional funding can speed the process of acquiring interviews, images and graphics for an entertaining and informative film, that we will air at film festivals and distribute to schools and educational institutions.
