About Emily Kassie

Emily Kassie is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, journalist, photographer and humanitarian. She currently works as a photo and video journalist for The Huffington Post covering topics from Syria to Sexual Assault. She graduated Brown University with honors in 2014 with a B.A. in Politics, Film and Journalism, a regional focus on East Africa and a thematic focus on human rights and genocide. Her feature film 'I Married My Family's Killer,' on intermarriage in post-genocide Rwanda has screened at myriad festivals and won a number of awards including, the Silver Chris Award for Best In Division, at Columbus Film Festival, Outstanding Achievement Humanitarian Award, Global Film Awards, the Humanitarian Award in the International Best Shorts Festival and others. The film airs on CBC's documentary channel. Emily was a finalist for the Rhodes scholarship in 2014 and recipient of the Watson fellowship for International Relations at Brown. Emily also co-founded and ran an NGO called Pamoja Products that provided an alternative income for Ugandan communities of ex-child soldiers and impoverished women.
