A short film competition for emerging sci-fi filmmakers

“NO BOND IS STRONGER THAN FAMILY”

To celebrate the release of KIN in theaters August 31st, DUST is proud to partner with Lionsgate, KIN and its directors Jonathan & Josh Baker to host a short film competition for emerging sci-fi filmmakers.

BACKGROUND: In 2015, filmmakers Jonathan & Josh Baker premiered their short film BAG MAN at SXSW Film Festival. After receiving a strong response from audiences and critics alike, they began developing the short into KIN; a feature film now starring Jack Reynor, Dennis Quaid, Zoe Kravitz and introducing Myles Truitt, coming to theaters this August 31st. The Baker Brothers, pulling from their personal experiences, professional expertise, and love of the science fiction genre, are now set to judge the KIN x DUST $10,000 Sci-Fi Short Film Competition, and offer emerging filmmakers a platform for their own short films to be seen by DUST’s devoted audience of science fiction fans.

KIN x DUST $10,000 Sci-Fi Short Film Competition Overview: Filmmakers should submit an original sci-fi short film inspired by KIN’s tagline: “No bond is stronger than family.” All compliant submissions which explore the theme of family through the lens of science fiction will be considered.

CALL FOR ENTRIES:

  • Submit a film between 1 - 15 minutes in length.
  • The Baker Brothers, DUST and Lionsgate will select the “winning” sci-fi short film based on an established criteria of judging.
  • The Baker Brothers, DUST and Lionsgate will additionally select three films as runners-up to be eligible for the “DUST Audience Award.” The one winner of this award will determined by a vote from the DUST community.

PRIZES: 

Grand Prize Winner will receive: A check for $10,000 USD, the exclusive premiere of their competition-winning short film across DUST and a private consultation with Jonathan and Josh Baker (video chat, call, or in-person; per the Baker’s discretion and availability).

DUST Audience Award Winner will receive: The exclusive premiere of their DUST Audience Award-winning sci-fi short film on WatchDust.com, 2 free tickets (via gift card) to see KIN and DUST and KIN promotional prize pack & swag. Audience voting does not happen on theaudienceawards.com.
